Mobile Health

Applications running on the mobile platform are uniquely positioned to assess health behavior and to support health-related decision making.

Projects:

MoodRhythm – Identifying novel methods to detect relapse in bipolar disorder and support a balanced lifestyle.

Clockwise What does the way you use your phone say about you? Clockwise is exploring whether low level smartphone interactions vary according to mood, alertness and circadian rhythms.

Chronic Pain Management – A multidisciplinary approach to exploring the management of chronic conditions, particularly chronic pain, through mobile technologies.

Behavioral Biomarkers – A project addressing the challenge of transforming personal behavioral data streams into robust measures relevant to individual health and clinical decision-making.

Nutriphone – Exploring health feedback and values using a smartphone-based micronutrient testing system.

BeWell –  A smartphone application to monitor, model and promote well-being.

MyBehavior – The first smartphone app that provides effective personalized health suggestions automatically, going beyond commonly used one-size-fits-all prescriptive approaches or tailored interventions from healthcare professionals which are difficult to scale.

 

Social Networks

The purpose of this research is to understand how mobile phones can be used to employ various forms of social interactions and interventions to encourage healthy behavior.

Sustainable Design

IDL sustainable design projects focus on broad cultural understandings of sustainability and everyday practices.

Projects:

Sustainable Design Collaboration – This research is a two-part, ongoing, two-year project on the work of designers and, in particular, on the way they use tools and technologies to support their collaborative design practices.  Using qualitative interviews and ethnographic observation, we have discovered some early patterns in how designers use material and digital artifacts as well as how they organize their teaching and professional practice to promote open collaboration models.

The Farmer’s Market and Everyday Sustainability –  A series of design-oriented studies conducted around the Ithaca Farmer’s Market.

Projects:

Frontstage –  Frontstage is an audience participation system that was built for interpretive flexibility among users.  The system consists of a Presenter Portal that is run on an iPad and an audience app that can be run on an iPhone or iPod.  The aim is to test the system in a wide variety of contexts to examine how users appropriate and interpret the device, and, by extension, their relationship to the presenter and the audience.

SunDial –  SunDial is an iPhone app that uses GPS to lead families at a local science center on a geocaching adventure in which each cache contains a learning module. The app used the map function to lead families to the cache, and then allowed interactive responses to questions about the module.

mood.cloud – An installation in Gates Hall that explores the artistic display of data, translating collective emotion data into a sculpture of light.

MoodLight – A playful system that uses ambient colored light to provide feedback regarding an individual’s current stress levels, encouraging reflection and non-judgmental self-awareness.

SESAME Measuring and making sense of momentary stress, and the environments in which it is experienced.

TRAC – A customized smartphone application that captures smoking urges and behaviors among nondaily and light daily smokers.
